Atypical: “Noise Makers”
![]()
October 25, 2009 07:00 pm
Tickets: $10
Although the Bride has been bending genres for forty years, we recognize that there’s a lot of artistic territory out there that we don’t cover. And there are many artists in Philadelphia and beyond who get few chances to display their remarkable gifts to the world. Locally, there are seldom platforms to showcase those incredibly rare individuals (or groups) that defy category, yet inspire awe nonetheless. In the new series Atypical, we’re working with co-curators who have their fingers on the pulse of the next big thing and putting them on the Bride’s stage. Three performances will be showcased at each event.
October 25, 2009 Artists: Noise Makers
Ryat
Ryat is a cutting edge multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer from Philadelphia, PA. She has toured all over, collaborating live with some of the worlds top musical artists of our time, including Billy Martin, Calvin G. Weston, Mike Dillon, King Britt, DJ Logic, Taylor McFerrin and Skerik. Her intuitive artistic drive towards Instrumental Art has also brought her to into a visual realm collaborating with multi-media artist, choreographers, film makers, live painters as well as interactive-video artist. With her live performances, she is known for her wide vocal range, unique powerful tone and words, her improvisational techniques and her usage of live instrumental looping and effects. In the studio, she is appraised for her multi-time signature innovative arrangements and her fresh outlook on evolving sound styles. In 2008 she was endorsed by Reason software to experiment with all of their newest products for her latest record to be released in November 2009, entitled “Street Noise Orkestra.”
Ryat studied mostly at Kutztown University, where she felt she had the freedom to focus on all forms of art. There she studied creative writing, art, improvisation, and classical and jazz studies. She attended the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music for one semester in NY and returned back to Kutztown to finish her degree in a more open, yet secluded manor. In 2004, Ryat moved to Philadelphia to continue her studies in the professional world and to experiment in electronics.
Recently Ryat’s ever evolving band consists of many world class instrumentalists such as multi instrumentalist/composer Tim Conley, (who has shared stages with artists such as Flaming Lips, Mike Gordon, Bernie Worrell and Mike Watt). When touring with more than just a duo, Ryat will bring along many special guests including drummer Mark Guiliana, (who was cited in Modern Drummer 2007 readers poll as “one of the best up-and-coming stars of today’s drumming scene,”) Jason Fraticelli, (bass player touring with Matisyahu and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey,) and Chris Wood (of Grimace Federation ). www.myspace.com/ryat
*Ryat will be discussing her process and giving an example performance of live vocal processing.
DJ Statik
A soon to be legend in the field of DJing, Mr. Sonny James, frequently referred to as Statik has carved his place in the rich musical history of the city of Philadelphia. With a true knowledge, skill, and understanding of crowd control, Statik has exploded locally, nationally and internationally unleashing a barrage of perfect projects along with DJ force the Illvibe Collective (DJ’s Phillee Blunt, Panek, Lil Dave and Skipmode). The blueprint of the DJ is symbolized by Statik’s keen awareness of all types of music, aptly mixing and blending hip-hop, classic funk & soul, reggae, bossa nova, samba, salsa, jazz, and house, meanwhile presenting the finished product in a way that each one who listens feels like the product was produced exclusively for them. Statik’s skill is also outstanding in performance as being summoned to hold things down as the stage-show DJ and backup vocalist for J- Live, Bahamadia, Jneiro Jarel, Hezekiah and a host of others on tours across the globe. He has worked with many of the “important people to know” in Philadelphia in NYC since 1999 and with so much under his belt, Statik feels like he’s just beginning.

Hezekiah
Question: What do you get when you mix a Delaware-raised former choirboy and preteen Funk singer with a diehard DIY Hip Hop head who cites country music, Quincy Jones and Kool G. Rap as influences in the same breath?
Answer: One of the dopest Emcees-slash-producers-slash-singers-slash-guitar players-slash-songwriters that you’ve never heard. You can call him Hezekiah.
Getting up with the Legendary Roots Crew in ‘93 spurred him to get down to business. He began to work his way up through the ranks of the Phillys ever-strong Hip Hop scene with his on point wordplay, superior songwriting, and lovely production skills working with the likes of Musiq Soulchild, Santigold, Freeway, Bilal, The Jazzyfatnastees, the Roots, Bahamadia and much more .
Fast forward to 2005, and Hezekiah’s finished his debut album Hurry Up And Wait (a title dedicated to the woes of the independent artist), is dropping on New York’s Soulspazm Records (notable exceptions coming from Illmind and Anthony Accurate) with Hezekiah flowing beautifully atop it every second of the way. And although the record is intended to let Hezekiah shine, the guestlist is impressive: Bahamadia, Scratch (The Roots), Grand Agent and Santi White (aka Santigold) all make appearances. This is an album intended for headphones, getting deep tissue massages, and eating fruit smorgasbords at dusk straight up. Currently has a new release with Five Six Media featuring his sister Marjani entitled “Ways Out Now”.
*Hezekiah will give an overview of his process, answer questions, and conduct a short performance.
