In their quest to redefine and re-evaluate the traditional boundaries of the performing and visual arts, Miro Dance Theater pushes the envelope in HOW AM I NOT MYSELF?, an autobiographical collaboration between Miro Dance choreographer Amanda Miller and Indian Bharatanatyam choreographer Viji Rao of Three Aksha. At the age of four, Amanda Miller and Viji Rao began their classical training at opposite ends of the globe. Now, thirty years later and following professional classical careers in ballet and Bharatanatyam respectively, they have joined forces to embark on a journey of mythology, media and madness. With Tobin Rothlein’s video artistry, Miller and Rao engage the audience in their exciting exploration as they mirror their transitions from classical dance to contemporary movement. In December 2009, Miro Dance premièred How Am I Not Myself? in two cities in India: Bangalore and Ahmadabad.
“This is a work about bridging identities and cultures through time and movement, notes dancer and Artistic Director of Miro Dance Theatre, Amanda Miller. ” Bringing How Am I Not Myself? home to Philadelphia is an exciting challenge for us, artistically. Dance audiences familiar with the classical ballet form and training will be especially familiar with the joys and struggles that this new work presents.”
Free admission to the dance party immediately following the show on January 30th with show ticket.
