A prolific writer and actor, Spalding Gray touched millions with his funny, insightful and honest stories about his triumphs, tragedies and struggles with daily life and depression. Beloved and admired by fans and peers alike, his untimely death in 2004 left much unsaid. His widow, Kathie Russo and director, Lucy Sexton, have compiled a series of unpublished works, poems and monologues to continue Gray’s conversations. The five actors speak directly to the audience as Gray did. The monologues evolve chronologically and are divided in to the categories of “love,” “career,” “family,” and “adventure.” The show also includes excerpts from Sex and Death to Age 14, Terrors of Pleasure, Swimming to Cambodia, Impossible Vacation, Gray’s Anatomy, Monster in a Box, It’s a Slippery Slope, Morning Noon and Night, and Life Interrupted.
In this daring tribute, a core cast of renowned stage and film actors, who perform the piece regularly are: Michael Cunningham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours; Carmelita Tropicana; Josh Lefkowitz; Lucy Sexton and Ain Gordon. Each night a special guest joins the cast:
- Thursday, March 25th: Philly’s own Jen Childs of Philly’s own 1812 Productions
- Friday, March 26th: Host of WHYY’s “Radio Times with Marty Moss Coane”, Marty Moss-Coane
- Saturday, March 27th: Broadway and tv/film star Sheryl Lee Ralph
Spalding Gray: Stories Left to Tell does more than recapitulate words- it truly embodies and invokes the genius and spirit of Spalding Gray.
Spalding Gray: Stories Left to Tell was funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative.
