“This young musician and composer is at once reestablishing the artistic, cultural, and social tradition of jazz while creating an entirely new jazz language for the 21st century.”-MacArthur Foundation
2010 Grammy-nominated saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenon is one of the hottest artist to emerge in the next generation of Latin Jazz greats. This co-founder of the San Francisco Jazz Collective and 2008 MacArthur Fellow integrates a variety of jazz techniques with a rich Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric tradition called plena, to take you on an enticing and innovative journey. In Esta Plena, Zenon demonstrates his musicianship and genius by configuring plena-typically played on panderos (frame drums)-as the rhythmic foundation for his compositions. Improvised lyrical incantations of the pleneros (plena vocalists/percussionists) provide animated and melodic infusions Zenon’s compositions. Zenon’s quartet features Luis Perdomo, piano; Hans Glaswischnig, bass; Henry Cole, drums; and three pleneros: Hector “Tito” Matos, Juan Gutierrez and Olu Allende. (miguelzenon.com)
