Known for its innovation, creativity and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance, Philadanco returns to the Bride for their annual evening to showcase its next generation of talent. ‘Danco on ‘Danco apprentices ranging from ages 9 to 23 take the stage to give it everything they’ve got. Time will tell if they have what it takes to join the higher ranks of the internationally esteemed troupe. For this showcase is a time and place for them to shine on pointe with plenty of family encouragement.
A day in the life of an aspiring professional dancer calls for, on average, eight hours of intense practice every day for years. The steps between a dancer’s humble beginnings and the international spotlight are many. There’s practice. Open call auditions. Practice. Closed-door critiques. Practice. Opening night dress rehearsals. More practice. Finally touring around the world for months at a time with an overwhelming wardrobe in tow Besides having a lot of leotards, leggings, tutus, tights, and pointe shoes, it takes hard work, determination, courage and a healthy dose of poise to be a pro – all of which Joan Myers Brown instilled into the company she founded 40+ years ago.
