From dusk to dawn, El Velador (The Night Watchman) accompanies Martin, a guard who watches over the extravagant mausoleums of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords. Set in the labyrinth of the cemetery, this film about violence without violence reminds us that even in the midst of a drug war, ordinary existence persists in Mexico, quietly defying the dead. Directed by Natalia Almada. (Mexico/USA, 2011, 72 min)
