InLiquid presents Larger Works, a solo show featuring the monumental work of artist member John Turner at the Painted Bride Art Center Café Gallery. Turner’s mixed media works on canvas are massively scaled abstracts, heavily manipulated with many layers of paint and string applied by hand, and with scrapers, of varying sizes, and shapes. The process of adding each new layer is repeated, both vertically and horizontally, until spider-like lines and a thick worked surface appear over the canvas and string. Enamel and oil stick paints are applied over the existing texture, further abstracting the surface of the work. The final piece is a heavily worked landscape that plays with: light, form, and color (or the lack of color).

Turner’s paintings play with perspective, having one impression when seen at a distance, and conveying quite a different meaning once viewed up close. Turner likens this to “the way sound waves can appear as a thin line, when seen from afar, but when amplified hundreds of times, become cavernous.”

Turner has works in private collections from Princeton, New Jersey, to Los Angles, California. He is originally from Montreal, Canada, and now lives and works in Philadelphia.
