hosted by University of Pennsylvania's freshman seminar on Black Cityscapes
Join us for an evening of conversation, story-telling, and performance in a belated commemoration of World AIDS Day. Students from University of Pennsylvania’s freshman seminar on Black Cityscapes will perform extracts of Jamaica Kincaid’s My Brother (Antigua/USA) or Phaswane Mpe’s Welcome to My Hillbrow (South Africa). Feel free to read Kincaid or Mpe and join in the discussion! They’ll also present monologues built from interviews with AIDS activists and orphans from Nairobi, Kenya and Philadelphia. Between each piece audience members are invited to share their experiences, memories, and personal stories or to a favorite memoir, novel or art work about AIDS. In addition, Positive Effect Outreach Ministry will be offering free, confidential HIV testing for all those present.
