Set sail across the ocean blue with Papo Vazquez and his The Mighty Pirates Troubadours driven by the rhythmic winds of his native Puerto Rico. Experience the rich, colorful warmth of PLENA, various BOMBA styles, as well as MERENGUE – a rhythm hailing from Puerto Rico’s neighboring island of Dominican Republic. A 2011 NEA Master, a 2009 Grammy-nominee, Philly born and bred Vazquez is trailblazer with 35 years on both the Lain and jazz scene.
The Mighty Pirates Troubadours currently have six CD recordings. The last CD, Marroned/Aislado, produced LIVE from the Bride garnered a NARAS 2009 Grammy nominee for “Best Latin Jazz Recording.” The prior CD, From the Badlands, was considered one of 2007’s “10 Best Latin CDs” by New York Newsday, as well as one of All About Jazz’s 2008 “Best Latin Jazz Releases.”
Papo Vazquez continues to thrust forward from his authentic foundation in Afro-Caribbean musical styles and traditions enabling him to spawn some of the boldest jazz orchestrations being authored and/or experienced today. Each member of his crew is a leader in their own right. First band mate, Willie Williams (tenor sax) also a Philadelphia native, has been with the band for over 20 years. The ensemble rounds out with Dezron Douglas (bass), Alvester Garnett (drums), Anthony Carrillo and Carlos Maldonado (percussion), and Rick Germanson (piano).
Brace yourselves…these pirates come armed for a musical assault. There is a definite chance your musical allegiance will be stolen!
