Playing new compositions from his recent Chamber Music America commission, Motherland Suite, New York guitarist Rez Abbasi continues to challenge the integration of his Indian/Pakistani heritage with jazz. This concert will demonstrate his talents as a conceptualist and a virtuosic instrumentalist as his group entangles in an endless arsenal of fresh ideas – not to be missed.

Throughout Europe, Canada, the U.S., Mexico and India – Rez Abassi is considered one of the foremost modern jazz guitar players today. A delicate fusion of musical styles and colorful traditions – gently rolled into one live performance, this rising star steps front and center as leader with bold compositions that draw upon the joy and enigmatic spirit of Qawwali, within a familiar “post bop, modern jazz” framework. Enthusiasts can expect a well-informed guided tour through southern Asia to discover ancient devotional traditions practiced within the Muslim faith. A secular music with both a serious and playful side, Qawwali – nearly a century old, has recently been featured at major world music festivals gaining mainstream attention.  From a high level altitude, Bride-goers will experience something completely new gaining fresh global perspective from Abbasi – an artist who continues to push boundaries to chart the outer reaches of the jazz idiom.
