A timely exploration of the criminal justice system, Spiritrials chronicles one man’s journey toward criminalization along with his struggle to be vindicated in the eyes of the law and society.
“With this project, I was looking for a way to combine everything that I do,” says creator and writer, Dahlak Brathwaite. The poet rapper, and actor flaunts credits including appearances on Def Jam Poetry and as part of Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s critically-acclaimed Word Becomes Flesh which was showcased on the Bride’s stage in 2011. The play, directed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Sean San Jose, sees Brathwaite seamlessly blending acting, poetic verse, and original songs to blur the lines between hip-hop and dramatic performance.
