A Night of Youth Poetry and Open-Mic Offerings

In partnership with Philadelphia Student Union, the Painted Bride is curating a night of poetry offerings at 5212 Market Street! Hosted by and created for youth, this experience is meant to empower our young people (ages 14-21) to use their voice and follow their passion.

4-6PM: Youth poetry workshop led by poet ursula rucker. By RSVP only – space is limited to 20 participants.

6-7PM: Performances from poets Jordan Plain, ShirminaGeneva, and Alex Brunson

7-8PM: Open mic for youth poets


Artist Bios

ShirminaGeneva is a published writer, spoken word artist, event curator, host, creative director and youth mental health and joy advocate. With almost a decade of experience in writing and performing poetry, ShirminaGeneva has graced many stages across the east coast and beyond including, Twitter Headquarters in Sacramento, California, Busboy and Poets in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She has spoken at events such as the National Women’s Conference in 2018 and The Black Women’s March in Philadelphia, yearly. Shirmina also doubles as a teaching artist, having taught pleasure-based and artistic workshops, including a Poetry and Hip-Hop class at Temple University. She is co-founder of Philly-based artist collective, Your Favorite Jawns, and creator of the pleasure positive platform, Ebony Erotix. By day, Shirmina is a substitute teacher, child care professional, and certified Behavioral Health Technician.

Jordan Plain is a multihyphenate creative who cannot be boxed in. Born and raised in Philadelphia, and ever inspired by the city. Jordan creates for sustenance using a blend of poetry, graphic design, and photography to capture life at its purest.
