MICHELLE MYERS

Michelle Myers is an award-winning poet, author, and educator whose work centers on storytelling, cultural memory, and voice. A founding member of the Asian American female spoken word poetry group Yellow Rage, she was among the first Asian American women to appear on HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry.

Her poetry has been featured in Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now; My Life: Growing Up Asian in America; We the Gathered Heat: Asian American and Pacific Islander Poetry, Performance, and Spoken Word; and other anthologies and publications. Her work has also appeared in USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and on the Smithsonian Channel.

In 2024, Michelle received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for her middle-grade novel Talk Me a Story about Moon Rabbit. In 2025, she was commissioned by the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles to write a poem for its exhibition (Be)Spoken: Voices from Asian America.

An award-winning educator, Michelle has received both the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award and the Octavius V. Catto Legacy Award for Advocacy from the Community College of Philadelphia. She is the faculty coordinator, co-creator, and producer of the Emmy-nominated spoken word poetry television series Drop the Mic on CCPTV.

She also hosts the podcast Mind Your Margins, produced by her daughter, Myong.
