Belle Alvarez: On Process + Upcoming Events

Are you an artist, activist, or city worker looking to dialogue with us? Are you a twenty or thirty something? You’re invited to join Belle Alvarez at the Bride on Tuesday, October 17 from 6 – 8pm! In collaboration with Al-Bustan, Belle will be facilitating a movement workshop based on experiences of migrants and refugees. Below, Belle talks about her process leading up to the BrideNext Culminating Showcase in November.

Why is culture important to you?

What borders do you wish didn’t exist?

These questions, generated by Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture’s Immigrant Alphabet project, are some of the questions I am holding as I dialogue with performers, community members, and local advocacy orgs on the current climate of immigration.

In rehearsal, we are reflecting on re-constructing and re-imagining home, our bodies as moving archives, the legacy we carry and pass on, and cultural transformation through decolonization.

Kinan Abou-afach artfully switches from his evocative, dynamic cello to the quieter sounds of the oud when Ani Gavino practices monologue with her dancing. Interdisciplinary savvy, donia salem keenly reflects on how one can never go back to the home they knew, and how diaspora is in constant shift.

For me, BrideNext has been a meaningful integration of the kinds of work I am passionate about: community engagement, storytelling, and immigrant advocacy. On November 17 and 18, we will be weaving together movement, poetry, and live music in our presentation.
