In this class, we’ll explore and learn the fundamentals of various forms of samba from Bahia and Rio De Janeiro. Class is open to all levels, including absolute beginners!

 

What is samba?
Samba is a fast-paced and lively dance style. Classes will involve dynamic movements that range from stepping and tilting to rocking body movements. Samba also has many different variations! We’ll delve into samba’s roots, rhythm, and cultural essence while exploring self-expression and performance.

Artist Bio

Elaine Smith Holton is a movement and music Teaching Artist in Philadelphia through her creative arts organization PHonk!Philly. Since 2008, Elaine has been practicing community-based dance and drumming when she served as a Passista and Dance Director of Austin Samba, a Brazilian Rio style, community education and performance bateria out of Austin, TX. During her time as Dance Director she’d go on to choreograph and produce four Carnaval Brasileiro shows as part of the largest indoor Brazilian Carnaval show in the US. She has studied under Samba masters, Rosangela Silvestre, Ana Carla Laidley, and Melissa Corpus.
