Moving Music features an accessible dance aerobics workshop from Queerobics and multimedia musical performances from local Disabled artists. This event centers Disabled, Sick, neurodivergent, and MAD people in Philadelphia. Disabled Philadelphians and nondisabled accomplices of all ages are welcome.

Part of Undue Burden (Oct. 19 – Nov. 23, 2024), a community archive and event series celebrating the experiences of Disabled people.

Note: If you are questioning whether you are disabled enough, this space is for you. If you are a nondisabled accomplice, this space is for you. This space centers sick, MAD, neurodivergent, and Disabled community members, and we also understand that these identities and experiences may overlap with other forms of systemic oppression and otherness, that some identities might resonate while others might not. We will not police your identity, but rather we create space for exploring these forms of identity and the creative potential of disability art-making. You are welcome here in all your questions and complexities.

Event Schedule

1-2pm: Queerobics Workshop

An accessibility-centered, all-levels dance aerobics class led by Queerobics, a collective of queer, trans, and chronically ill dance artists. Class will feature some spooky Halloween favorites! Dance Captains Leigh and Eli will guide attendees through a warm up, cool down, follow along dances, and creative improvisations, including low impact variations and participation from a seated position.

3-6pm: Musical Performances

Content warning: Performance by Anna Young will be loud! Earplugs will be plentiful and provided.

Experience multimedia performances from local sound/music artists (George Shands, Parker Gabriel, Ash Phillips, Jfresh, Layer Meat aka Anna Young) in the round. Performances will happen in the center of the room.

Throughout the performances, audiences are invited to float between different areas of the theater specified to care for our emerging needs. There will be spaces for laying, resting, dancing, and creating stamps from air dry clay to be used later in our ‘Touching Craft’ program.

Shannon Brooks will facilitate an open practice for musical improvisation, listening, and movement guided by the ideas of Deep Listening from Pauline Oliveros. All artists and audience members are invited to participate.

ASL interpretation on-site from 4-6pm.

3-6pm: Archive/Access Engagement

Audiences are invited to add to our creative community captioning installation, a cozy desk-like space nestled next to the performances where audiences can document written captioning and/or drawings expressing what they are experiencing. These descriptions and drawings will be projected into the space, serving as our live, creative community captioning. Anything written or drawn will be later printed out and pinned to our fabric installation.
