Voices of 52nd Street: Then & Now (VO52nd St.) enters its culminating season with two public events celebrating the completion of this multi-year community storytelling and documentary project. Together, these gatherings invite audiences to experience the stories, memories, and cultural legacy collected, shared, and preserved throughout the life of the project.

VO52nd St. Pop-Up
Presented as part of the Mann Center’s Highmark Milestone Mashup Community Day
Join us for a special community pop-up celebrating the people, places, and stories that define West Philadelphia’s historic 52nd Street corridor. Through conversation, storytelling, and interactive archival activities, festival-goers are invited to experience the living history of a neighborhood whose legacy continues to shape the city today.
This October
VO52nd St. Documentary Premiere, Performance & Community Reception
The culminating public event for VO52nd St. brings together documentary film, live performance, and community celebration in an evening honoring one of Philadelphia’s most significant Black cultural corridors.
Featuring voices of residents, artists, civic leaders, business owners, and community witnesses, the documentary explores the history, resilience, and enduring cultural influence of 52nd Street while celebrating the people whose lives continue to define its legacy.

West Philadelphia neighborhoods are changing quickly. VO52nd St. set out to document community stories and create opportunities for neighbors to gather, reflect, and heal.
Over the past several years, VO52nd St. has invited West Philadelphia residents to preserve the stories, memories, and cultural legacy of one of Philadelphia’s most significant Black commercial corridors. Through oral histories, creative workshops, public programs, community conversations, and documentary filmmaking, artist Pamela Hooks and Painted Bride partnered with neighbors to build a living archive honoring the people, places, businesses, traditions, and personalities that define 52nd Street.
Once known as a vibrant center of Black entrepreneurship, music, fashion, civic leadership, and neighborhood life, 52nd Street remains an important cultural touchstone whose history continues to influence West Philadelphia today.
As neighborhoods evolve, the project asks a simple but enduring question:
How do we preserve community memory while imagining its future?
Through shared stories and creative engagement, VO52nd St. celebrates resilience, strengthens intergenerational connections, and ensures that the voices of those who built this community continue to be heard.

A Retrospective
Throughout the project, community members gathered through a series of public events that transformed storytelling into collective remembrance, celebration, and creative action.
Lee Morgan Historical Marker Celebration
Honoring legendary jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan while recognizing the lasting musical influence of 52nd Street as one of Philadelphia’s great destinations for Black arts and culture.
Memory Salon — Telling Our Stories from “Back in the Day”
Residents gathered to share photographs, memories, and personal stories, creating an intergenerational space where neighborhood history was preserved through conversation.
VO52nd St. — Your Voice. Your Vote.
A community voter education event connecting civic participation with the neighborhood’s longstanding tradition of political engagement and collective action.
Juneteenth Pop-up at Malcolm X Park: Containing Memories
Participants explored the connections between memory, care, and growth through a community container garden workshop, cultivating both plants and personal stories. Guests were invited to bring their gloves, share their stories, and take home a free garden container.
Relish & Remember at Paul Robeson House and Museum
Food became the catalyst for storytelling as neighbors gathered around the table to celebrate the restaurants, recipes, traditions, and everyday experiences that have nourished generations of West Philadelphians.
WHY THIS PROJECT MATTERS
Communities are shaped as much by memory as they are by buildings.
As neighborhoods change, stories are often the first things to disappear. Businesses close. Families move. Gathering places evolve. Without intentional efforts to preserve lived experience, the cultural identity of a community can fade within a generation.
Voices of 52nd Street: Then & Now reminds us that history is not only found in archives but in the memories of neighbors, artists, business owners, activists, musicians, and families who lived it.
By preserving these voices today, the project helps ensure that future generations inherit more than street names and photographs. They inherit the spirit of a community.
