something soft is a multimodal performance ritual from Ma’at Works Dance Collective (Mawu Gora, Jah Elyse Sayers, Majesty Royale-Jackson) exploring modalities of softness through diverse ideas of technology. Through multiple invitations we invite the audience into rhythmic somatic patterns, sensory exercises and lullabies to reimagine how we hold, suspend and care for ourselves. Afro Presentism speaks of the future as a moving present. We implore these strategies and use technologies from Alexis Pauline Gumbs, undrowned to imagine ourselves in our softest humanity. The work is inspired and made with, and by, black, neurodivergent, queer, trans and non-binary folk in mind.

Performance notes:

  • Performances are shifted and informed by their preceding workshops, so each of the 3 shows will be distinct experiences.
  • After the final show, there will be a reception with light refreshments, and a 30 minute Q&A facilitated by Hanifah Griffith regarding the making process of something soft with Main Collaborators
  • Audience reminders from the artists:
    • Be prepared to move, sleep and be in process with us. This show is interactive – when you’re ready, be prepared to move with us.
    • We are asking all participants to bring an offering for the altar. Offerings can be – flowers, foraged nature, pictures of ancestors, books, seashells, dried herbs, pressed flowers, oils, incense anything that is speaking to you as an offering to the altar
    • Be prepared to put your phones, bags and shoes in provided cubbies
    • Bring along with you items that make you feel comfortable (slippers, pillows, blankets and stuffed animals are welcome
    • Be willing and ready to go on a journey
